Day of Mourning

Statement on the International Day of Mourning – April 28, 2025

April 28 marks the International Day of Mourning, a solemn day observed in more than 100 countries to honour workers who have lost their lives, been injured, or fallen ill as a result of workplace hazards and occupational exposures. Originating in Canada and formally recognized by the federal government in 1991, this day calls on all of us -employers, governments, and unions – to recommit to building safer workplaces and stronger protections for all.

For the members of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, this day carries deep and personal significance. Rail work remains one of the most safety-critical and physically demanding sectors in the country. Our members – locomotive engineers, conductors and other transportation professionals – face daily risks to ensure the safe and reliable movement of freight and passengers across Canada. Tragically, some have paid the ultimate price in service to this vital industry.

On April 28, we honour the memory of those we have lost and stand with the families and coworkers they leave behind. We also acknowledge the many workers still living with the aftermath of work-related injuries or illnesses—often invisible, but no less devastating.

Let this International Day of Mourning serve as a powerful reminder: Every workplace death is preventable. Every injury is a call to action. And every member has the right to return home safely at the end of their shift.

We call on all TCRC members to observe a moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. on April 28 and to participate in local Day of Mourning ceremonies wherever possible. These collective acts of remembrance are not only a tribute to those we’ve lost—they are a public affirmation of our shared commitment to health, safety and justice for all workers.

Together, we will continue to fight for stronger enforcement of safety regulations, greater employer accountability and comprehensive protections for the physical and mental well-being of our members.

Mourn for the Dead. Fight for the Living.

In solidarity,
